Toby Christopher Barnard is emeritus fellow in history at Hertford College, University of Oxford. He joined the college in 1976 and retired in 2012.〔"Toby Barnard retires" in ''The Hertford College Magazine'', No. 92, 2012, pp. 29-31.〕 He was formerly lecturer in history at Royal Holloway (1970-1976). Barnard is a specialist in the political, social and cultural histories of Ireland and England, c. 1600-1800.〔(BARNARD, Dr Toby. ) British Academy. Retrieved 11 June 2015.〕 His ''A New Anatomy of Ireland'' (2003) was notable for the depth of primary research that Barnard carried out to complete it.
